Sperm Freezing

What Is Sperm Freezing?

Sperm freezing involves storing sperm in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196 degrees Celsius. This method allows the sperm to be stored for more than 10 years. It’s a service provided for male patients who need certain treatments that may involve radiation exposure, those seeking vasectomy, or in cases where the male partner cannot provide a sperm sample on the same day as the female partner’s egg retrieval. This allows the male partner to come to the clinic beforehand and freeze the sperm for later use.

Factors related to the success of sperm freezing include:

  • Quality of sperm before freezing
  • The type and concentration of cryoprotectants used to prevent damage to sperm.
  • Temperature used for freezing and thawing.
