IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination)

IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) is a medical technology that helps treat infertility ‘not arising from age-related factors.’ This method of insemination is considered one of the closest approaches to natural conception, as it involves directly injecting sperm into the uterus using small medical instruments that pass through the cervix. This method is regarded as one that significantly improves the chances of successful pregnancy.

Why is injecting sperm more effective than natural conception?

The success rate of insemination is 5 times higher than natural conception. This is because in natural conception, sperm must travel into the uterus on its own, and often weaker sperm may die before reaching the destination, resulting in failed conception. However, this injection method helps select the strongest sperm first. These selected sperm are then directly injected into the uterus, thereby increasing the chances of successful pregnancy.

Who is suitable for IUI?

  • Females under the age of 30 with issues related to cervical stenosis.
  • Those with chronic anovulation and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
  • Females with at least one functional fallopian tube or both tubes in normal condition.
  • Males with strong and rapidly moving sperm, with a count of over 5 million per ejaculation.

Who is not suitable for IUI?

  • Females over the age of 30 because the success rates of this method decrease with advanced age.
  • Females with fallopian tube issues that prevent its use.
  • Females with Endometriosis.
  • Males with weak, slow-moving sperm and a count of less than 1 million per ejaculation.
  • Males who are unable to ejaculate.

Advantages of IUI

  • Easy, convenient, and straightforward.
  • Safe.
  • Affordable treatment costs.
  • Higher chances of successful pregnancy compared to natural conception.

Disadvantages of IUI

This method is not suitable for females over the age of 30, due to the direct influence of age on egg quality. Older eggs tend to result in more difficult fertilization. It’s necessary for the doctor to conduct a thorough physical examination before undergoing the treatment. From what has been observed, patients aged 30 and above often encounter challenges related to the age of their eggs. These eggs tend to have thickened and hardened shells, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate and fertilize them. In such cases, if this issue arises, it’s recommended to opt for the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) method instead.

Additionally, if a patient has undergone insemination treatment more than 4 times without success, it may indicate that the couple is facing fertility challenges. Further comprehensive examinations of their overall reproductive health and systems might be necessary to identify the underlying causes and determine the most suitable corrective approaches.
